The Gunnison-Crested Butte area of Colorado is a little bit off the beaten path, but well worth taking the time to travel there. These two little mountain towns are great examples of the old west with their western and Victorian architecture and atmosphere. Simply unpretentious and down to earth, a trip to the area is full of fun.
With its close proximity to the Gunnison National Forest and several Colorado Wilderness areas, Gunnison-Crested Butte's backyard consists of 1.6 million acres of spectacular playgrounds. The Town of Crested Butte is a registered National Historic District and turn of the century Victorian mining town. Gunnison is the gateway to western heritage rich in ranching and farming and the home of Western State College of Colorado.
In the summer, enjoy sightseeing, camping, biking, horseback riding, hot air ballooning day hikes, kayaking and canoeing. Winter sports include alpine skiing, snowboarding, tubing and riding the terrain pipes. Both Crested Butte and Gunnison has a variety of accommodations including hotels, motels, vacation rental homes, condominiums, and luxury resorts.
